Event Highlights

The conference has come and gone, and there was much energy throughout the entire event as nearly 350 economic development practioners and stakeholders convened to learn more about successful approaches to economic development from all corners of the EDA Philadelphia region.

While there were many interesting and thought provoking speakers who covered almost 20 different topics, some of the highlights included:

  • Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development John Fernandez spoke to conference attendees three times: the opening reception on Monday evening, the opening plenary session on Monday, and as keynote speaker during lunch, also on Monday. Attendees were able to ask the Assistant Secretary questions after his remarks.
  • A mobile workshop took over 25 individuals to the Respond Workforce Development Center in Camden, New Jersey, where they learned about the organization's approach to providing auto mechanics and culinary arts training in a distressed community. They also visited the Philadelphia Navy Yard, to learn about the joint initiative funded by EDA and OEA to rebuild the former Navy Yard into a "vibrant, mixed use," site for businesses and residences, complete with LEED certified buildings. Participants agreed the tour of each site was educational and fascinating.
  • An interesting presentation from Dr. Howard Slaughter, President and CEO of Landmarks Community Capital Corporation, about communicating in a global environment.
  • Mayor Michael Nutter welcomed the group on Monday.
  • Two sessions on the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy Process (CEDS) provided insights into getting greater involvement from regional leaders in the process, and ways to tap into existing (and mostly free) data sources to facilitate the overall and on-going planning process.
  • Attendees learned how communities are rebounding from the economic devastation caused by major plant closures, how to overcome obstacles to building strong economies in rural communities, the critical need for broadband in order for local businesses to jump into the global marketplace, ways that university centers are combining their research work with job creation strategies, and examples for incorporating green-led development into community and economic growth strategies.
  • Presenter PowerPoint presentations will be uploaded to this site ASAP. Please visit this site again soon.
